SO today I saw author John Green speak at the Theater Building in Chicago. The theater was relativley small and just fit the amount of people that showed up. The inside was covered with what looked like Army netting. It had good acoustics but that could be because I was front and center. They also broadcast live.
Let me say that it was one of the best experiences of my life. John was a hilarious fellow and kept everyone’s attention. Most of the people there, myself included, were part of a community in which the people call themselves Nerdfighters. The group was created because of him and a project with his brother Hank Green called Brotherhood 2.0, that main goal meaning to stop the spread of suck. While I am only a Padawan of Nerdfighter culture I still felt like I was one with the family.
Because of this community the people at the book signing (the book being Will Grayson, Will Grayson which is excellent so far) were friendly and made the atmosphere pulsate with awesomeness. One could tell by John’s demeanor that he was excited to tell those about his new book and you could tell that he loves what he does. He explained his writing processes and how difficult the book was to write and how fun it was to collaborate with David Levithan.
Now, David Levithan.
I am not a big fan of his, the reason being because I have not read much of his work. But those that I have read were good, but I am a bigger fan of John Green’s writing. I think it is because I connect with the works more, my favorite being Looking for Alaska. I love the story and the progression of the plot and I adore the characters that are created. Anyways, David was also funny but I think he was overshadowed by John. He had the same amount of energy but he was a lot quieter than John, who has a very loud and deep voice. The funniest part of the whole event was when the two acted out some selections from Will Grayson… At that point everyone in the theater was laughing.
The overall point being that the event was watching, and if you have not read any works by John Green you should. As a P.S the books are not just for YAs. They are for everyone.
